An Story of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I figured to book a place to stay when I arrived, but when I arrived, a major event was in town and all the budget hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could bed down in the terminal – only to discover the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, does not operate 24 hours. Unsure of how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking near the casino, believing I could pass the night in a place operating 24/7. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for acing an interview the next day, however, being a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.
Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared confused since a woman noticed me loitering in the city center and inquired if everything was alright. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she suggested I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, considering that was where my interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided some food: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and a protected spot and secure for the evening.
Looking back, I can appreciate the significant risk she took as a young woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. In those days I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – and remain incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up go to the Australian National University, and I never saw the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of human compassion. I hope karma has rewarded her act of kindness tenfold. Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
