Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their release of a controversial video.
The Recording That Triggered the Debate
The video footage, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in defense or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all made an oath to protect and support this founding document," the lawmakers affirmed in the short video. "At present, the threats to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should decline improper directives. No one has to execute orders that violate the statutes or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement reportedly provoke a angry response from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This is really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Democratic leadership published a joint announcement condemning the remarks.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all served our nation with great patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against elected officials, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these unhinged social media posts and withdraw his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Officials' Defiant Reaction
The officials who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this United States and took an vow to protect and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No threat, coercion, or incitement will prevent us from that sacred duty."
"What's most telling is that the president deems it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they execute their vow to the constitution and duty to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the ex-president's calls for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for moral clarity."
More Governmental Reactions
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."
He stated: "This represents an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of the government advising soldiers to disobey orders, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The GOP official also allegedly stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the offense of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to analyze the language and decide all that."
White House Response
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Does the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have active officials of the US Congress who conspired to orchestrate a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She added: "The sanctity of our military relies on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is violated, it can cause fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
