American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays caused by climate and other issues.

More than three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," he remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak after the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as leader, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after thirty-five days.
