The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
