The McCann family Parent Demands Tougher Press Regulation Amid Accounts of Press "Tormenting".

Gerry McCann, father to Madeleine McCann has urged for more robust scrutiny of the UK media, describing how being "monstered" by the press made him feel that he was being "suffocated and buried".

The McCanns Subjected to Media Intrusion

Gerry McCann stated that his family was subjected to press "intrusions" and that the media had "repeatedly interfered with" the investigation into his daughter's 2007 disappearance.

He stated that the intrusion took a "huge toll" on his family. "We endured constant scrutiny and sensationalized stories for 15 months or more that compelled us to take legal action to stop it," he explained.

"We are lucky. We survived. We received incredible backing. Yet, I must tell you, there were times where I felt like I was being suffocated, and it was the media, primarily, not the situation we were in," he stated.

An Appeal for Revive Press Regulation Review

The McCanns are among more than 30 people who have endorsed a letter urging ministers to reopen the second phase of the Leveson inquiry, which was set up to look into the dynamic between the media and the police.

He expressed that it was not acceptable that more than a year on, press regulation was "no longer a priority". He said that his family had been endured "relentless targeting" by certain the media and that the press was "camped" outside his home for months after the disappearance.

Describing the Harassment

Detailing the events, he said: "Journalists coming to the house, photographers literally ramming their cameras against our car window, when we had young twin children in the back who were frightened, and how distressing that is for you as a parent."

"It's the inaccuracies. It's the fabrication of stories to suit a narrative, rather than the truth, which ruins lives," he stated.

The Need for Stronger Regulation and Redress

He stated these actions demonstrated why there needed to be more robust press regulation. "We'd be getting ready for bed, we'd put on the news, and there'd be major reports about ourselves and unverified claims," he told.

"That almost pulls you under, and you can see how people succumb to it and think they can't get out of it. It's so damaging, and we need that protection. There has to be redress. And at the minute, for most of these mainstream media, there is no effective recourse," he argued.

Government Response and Evolving Media Landscape

The Culture Secretary said that a follow-up part of the inquiry had been ruled out and that the news environment was now drastically altered.

"We agree that the context has evolved significantly since the Leveson's second phase was proposed: people now are more likely to get their news online from a whole variety of sources, which has created new and different challenges," they stated.

It was also noted that weighing the needs of those affected with the need for a free press was a "challenging task to get right," but acknowledged that "steps must be taken in this area".

An Enduring Search for Closure

The child went missing from a Portuguese holiday resort in 2007 at the age of three. It was stated that it was "profoundly disappointing" how the press had frequently obstructed with the investigation.

"Confidential details which was meant for police only... Consequently, anyone involved, you knew a lot more than you should have done," he said.

Regarding the ongoing search, he said the hope he would find his daughter was "slim but it's not extinguished". "We hope to find her alive, but we need to find out what happened and see justice served, and people are at risk while that perpetrator is free," he concluded.
