The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
